    Buying off-plan or new property is the first choice among many foreign investors in Australia.

    In fact, established property is only available to local citizens and temporary residents, unless you get an approval from the FIRB (Foreign Investment Review Board).

    The government introduced new buying regulations as late as 2015, to reduce the influx of foreigners (especially from China), and to protect the local market.

    As the trend becomes obvious and we see a higher demand for off-the-plan property, I decided to write this article where I list some of the biggest residential property developers in Australia.

    1. Metricon Homes

    Metricon has been ranked as the biggest residential developer in Australia by the Housing Industry Association (HIA) since 2011. In 2017, it retained its top position with 4,365 starts, more than any other developer.

    Metricon Homes was established in 1976 and the head office is located in Melbourne.

    Property types

    Metricon builds mostly single and double story homes. In addition, they offer services like knocking down old properties for rebuilding purposes, build display homes for investors and customize apartments according to your living style.

    You can also find home and land packages, where you simply buy a block of land with a different interiors and exteriors offered. Later, they build a house based on the design you select.

    Current projects

    Metricon homes builds individual homes instead of projects. You can explore different designs on their website, like Amalfi, Allure, Dromana and more than 80 other designs.

    Future projects

    You can find multiple packages on their website, including single and double story homes in different locations, as well as home and land packages.

    Prices & areas

    Based on the prices quoted on their website, you can find a home and land package in all major cities of Australia. Prices range from around $200,000 – 1,800,000, depending on location, land size, and the design you choose.

    They are currently building homes in South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria.

    2. Dyldam Developments

    Dyldam Developments is another big developer in Australia and was ranked as the second biggest property developer by HIA in 2017, with 3,605 starts. Now it’s ranked as the biggest apartment developer in the country.

    Dyldam Developments was founded in 1969 by Naim Khattar and Joseph Khattar.

    Almost all of the latest constructions are medium and high-rise apartment buildings within and around Sydney.

    In addition to residential apartments, they also develop commercial, retail, and mixed use projects.

    ABN Group was the third biggest property developer in Australia in 2017, with almost 3,500 starts.

    It was founded in 1978, while the head office is located in Perth, WA.

    The company offers a wide range of services, including development of properties along with home financing. For each service, the group assigns many of its own subsidiaries, like Dale Alock Homes, The Maker, ABN Realty, Parcel Property and Bluebay Home Loans.

    Property types

    The property development arm of ABN Group, Dale Alock Homes, builds individual homes instead of residential projects and apartments. But you can also find a few projects under the brand name Parcel Property.

    In addition, they offer house and land packages where you can choose a location, land area, and design. After, they build your property accordingly.

    You can find a wide range of property designs on their websites, including Akoya, Alba, Aria, Argyle, and many more.

    With 3,112 starts in 2017, it’s ranked the 4th largest residential developer in Australia by HIA.

    Some examples worth mentioning are: Wembley Stadium in London, the University of Glasgow, and many of the skylines in Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.

    Founded in 1963, Meriton apartments is a big property developer in Australia that focuses on high-rise serviced-apartment towers. It was ranked as the 5th biggest property developer in 2017 by HIA, having almost 3,000 starts.

    Meriton Apartments is owned by Harry Triguboff, who is also ranked as the second richest person in Australia by Forbes. Meriton has won numerous awards in the past and was ranked the 11th best company in the IBISWorld’s Top 500 companies, in 2014.

    The same as it goes with many other big property developers, Meriton Apartments also owns a subsidiary, Meriton Suites.

    As the name reflects, Meriton Apartments focuses on high-rise serviced apartments. In the last few years, Meriton has started to focus more on recreational and retail projects.

    6. MJH Group

    MJH Group is a big property developer in Australia and owns a multiple number of subsidiaries. It was ranked as the 6th largest residential developer by HIA in 2017 with almost 3,000 starts.

    Originally founded as a private investment and management consulting firm in 1998, the firm later expanded into real estate as well.

    The company owns a number of subsidiaries, such as Hayman Homes, MJH Multi Residential Projects, Mojo Homes, Wilson Homes, and more.

    Property types

    Include all types of properties such as commercial property, townhouses, retirement villages, and government buildings.

    Most of their residential projects are townhouses under the MJH Multi brand, but other brands like Mojo Homes, Wilson Homes and Hayman Homes build individual houses.

    Simonds Group Limited is currently headquartered in Victoria.

    Founded in 1924, Frasers Property is one of the biggest and oldest property developers in Australia. It’s the real estate arm of its parent company, Frasers Centrepoint.

    The head office of Frasers Property is in Rhodes, New South Wales. The parent company (Frasers Centrepoint) also operates in Singapore.

    Even if their commercial and residential projects are limited to Australia and Singapore only, their hospitality arm develops and manage hotels and resorts in 80 countries across the globe.
